Transliteration

Inna hadha lahu al-qasasu al-haqqu wa-ma min ilah illa Allah wa-inna Allah lahu al-Azizu al-Hakimu

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms that the narrative concerning Jesus (Isa) and Mary presented in the Qur'an is the absolute truth, rejecting the false narratives of both Christians and Jews. Allah emphasizes His absolute oneness (tawhid) and reminds humanity of His two supreme attributes: Al-Aziz (The Mighty/Invincible) and Al-Hakim (The All-Wise), which comprehensively demonstrate His power to reveal truth and wisdom in all matters. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir note this verse serves as a seal to the discussion of Jesus's birth and nature, establishing the Qur'anic account as definitive.

Revelation Context

This ayah concludes the detailed account of Jesus's miraculous birth (3:42-61) and comes after the refutation of Christian trinitarian beliefs. It appears in the Medinan period when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was addressing communities with significant Christian populations, particularly those holding false doctrines about Jesus's divinity.

Related Hadiths

The hadith in Sahih Muslim (2365) where the Prophet said: 'Jesus son of Mary is not but a slave of Allah and His Messenger' directly reinforces the Qur'anic teaching affirmed in this ayah. Additionally, the hadith concerning the Mu'tazilites in Jami' at-Tirmidhi relates to the proper understanding of Allah's attributes (Al-Aziz, Al-Hakim).
