Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah refers to Hell (Jahannam) as the final destination and return place for the transgressors and arrogant disbelievers on the Day of Judgment. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari explain that 'ma'aba' (مَآبًا) literally means 'a return' or 'a place of return,' emphasizing that Hell is the inevitable consequence and final abode prepared for those who transgress against Allah's commands and reject His guidance.
Revelation Context
Surah An-Naba is a Meccan surah that describes the Day of Judgment and the final destinations of believers and disbelievers. This ayah appears in the latter part of the surah (verses 21-30) where Allah contrasts the rewards of the righteous with the punishments awaiting the transgressors, reinforcing the central message of accountability on the Day of Resurrection.
Related Hadiths
The concept is supported by numerous hadiths regarding the Fire and its inhabitants. Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, 'The Fire of Hell is seventy times hotter than the fire of the world' (Sahih Bukhari). Also relevant is the hadith in Sahih Muslim where the Prophet described the vastness and horror of Hell for those who disobey Allah.
