An-Nahl · Ayah 16

وَعَلَـٰمَـٰتٍ ۚ وَبِٱلنَّجْمِ هُمْ يَهْتَدُونَ 16

Translations

And landmarks. And by the stars they are [also] guided.

Transliteration

Wa 'alāmātin wa bil-najmi hum yahtadūn

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to the signs and landmarks that Allah has placed on earth and the stars in the heavens that guide travelers and seafarers in their journeys. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir explain that 'alāmāt (signs/landmarks) refer to mountains, trees, and terrestrial markers, while an-najm (the stars) serve as celestial navigation tools. The ayah emphasizes Allah's wisdom in creating these guidance systems as evidence of His perfect design and provision for human needs.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears within Surah An-Nahl's broader discussion of Allah's blessings and signs (āyāt) scattered throughout creation. The surah, revealed in Mecca, systematically enumerates divine favors to encourage reflection on Allah's bounty and to reinforce monotheism during the Meccan period when the Quraysh rejected the Prophet's message.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: 'The stars are a blessing for travelers on land and sea. When the stars disappear, the Hour will be near.' (Sahih Muslim) This hadith directly relates to the navigational purpose of stars mentioned in this ayah.
