This ayah affirms that the Qur'an clarifies and resolves the majority of disputes and differences that existed among the Children of Israel regarding their religion and law. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir note that the Qur'an addresses numerous points of contention among the Jews—from matters of halal and haram to theological disputes—providing clear guidance and judgment (hukm) on these contentious issues. The ayah emphasizes the Qur'an's role as a decisive source of truth and reconciliation for matters that caused division among previous peoples.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah An-Naml, which was revealed in Mecca and contains the narrative of Prophet Sulayman and the ant. The broader context discusses how the Qur'an serves as guidance and clarification (tibyanan) for all people. This particular ayah follows discussions of divine guidance and precedes narratives illustrating how clear signs resolve confusion, fitting the surah's theme of divine wisdom making truth manifest.
