مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ 6

Translations

From among the jinn and mankind".

Transliteration

Mina al-jinnati wa-al-nnas

Tafsir (Explanation)

This phrase from the final ayah of Surah An-Nas refers to the evil whisperings that come from both jinn and mankind—two categories of beings capable of inspiring evil thoughts in human hearts. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi explain that Allah teaches the Prophet to seek refuge from these whispers, acknowledging that temptation and spiritual harm can originate from both invisible creatures (jinn) and visible human beings who may influence us toward evil through their actions, words, or examples.

Revelation Context

Surah An-Nas is a Meccan surah revealed to provide protection and spiritual refuge during a time of intense opposition to the Prophet Muhammad. This final ayah completes the surah's theme of seeking Allah's protection from all sources of evil and spiritual corruption, addressing the universal human struggle against temptation from multiple sources.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his companions to recite Surah An-Nas and its companion surahs (Al-Falaq and Al-Ikhlas) as protective invocations, particularly before sleep. These surahs are documented in Sahih Muslim and Sunan At-Tirmidhi as part of the prophetic daily practice of seeking Allah's protection.
