Tafsir (Explanation)

This opening ayah announces the arrival of Allah's divine support and the conquest (of Makkah), marking a pivotal moment of victory for the Muslim community. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as referring to the conquest of Makkah in 8 AH, where Allah granted the Prophet Muhammad and the believers ultimate triumph over their enemies. The ayah emphasizes that this victory comes from Allah alone, signifying the culmination of the Prophet's struggle and the vindication of his message.

Revelation Context

Surah An-Nasr was revealed in the final years of the Prophet's life, specifically after the conquest of Makkah. The historical context centers on the opening of Makkah to Islam, when the city that had long resisted the Prophet's message finally surrendered, allowing Muslims to freely practice their faith. This surah celebrates that monumental victory while simultaneously foreshadowing the completion of the Prophet's mission.

Related Hadiths

Sahih Bukhari records that when the Prophet heard this surah, he understood it signified the approach of his death. Additionally, the conquest of Makkah is extensively documented in hadith collections as fulfilling the vision the Prophet saw in Madinah of entering Makkah safely.
