This ayah describes Allah's creative power in making the night dark and bringing forth the brightness of day. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir explain this as evidence of Allah's perfect wisdom in creating alternating cycles of darkness and light for the benefit of creation, demonstrating His complete mastery over the celestial bodies and natural phenomena. Al-Qurtubi notes this is part of the divine signs showing how Allah sustains all creation through these balanced cycles.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah An-Nazi'at, a Meccan surah focused on the Day of Judgment and signs of Allah's power. It follows the previous ayahs describing how Allah expanded the earth and established mountains, continuing the theme of Allah's creative acts as evidence of His ability to resurrect and judge on the Day of Judgment.

While no hadith directly quotes this ayah, Sahih Bukhari contains numerous hadiths about the Prophet's night prayers and his reflection upon the night and day.
