Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to the provision and sustenance that Allah has created on earth for the benefit of mankind and their livestock. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as part of Allah's mercy and wisdom in creating the earth with its vegetation, water, and resources to support both human and animal life. The word 'mata'a' (متاع) denotes temporary provisions and enjoyment in this worldly life.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the context of Surah An-Nazi'at's discussion of creation and the Day of Judgment. It follows Allah's description of how He created the earth and made it habitable, establishing the theme of divine provision as evidence of Allah's creative power and care for His creation. The surah uses these examples of creation to convince the disbelievers of the certainty of the Resurrection.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'The best of you are those who are best to their families, and I am the best among you to my family' (Tirmidhi). This relates to the responsibility of providing for one's family and livestock mentioned in the ayah. Additionally, the hadith in Sahih Bukhari states that 'kindness to animals is kindness to humans,' reflecting the Quranic concern for livestock's welfare.
