Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah declares that those who reject Allah and His signs are true disbelievers, deserving of a humiliating punishment. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir explain that this verse emphasizes the reality and certainty of disbelief for those who persistently deny the truth after it has been made clear to them, and warns of the degrading torment prepared for them in the Hereafter.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the context of Surah An-Nisa's discussion of those who reject Allah's signs and turn away from faith. It follows verses addressing those who deny Allah's oneness and reject the prophets, serving as a definitive statement about the consequences of such rejection.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever disbelieves in Allah after having believed—except one who is forced while his heart is at peace with faith—but whoever opens his breast to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allah, and for them is a great punishment' (Surah An-Nahl 16:106, with thematic connection in Sahih Muslim 150).
