Transliteration

Wa-alladhīna āmanū bi-Allāhi wa-rusulih wa-lam yufarriqū bayna aḥadin minhum ulā'ika sawfa yu'tīhim ujūrahum wa-kāna Allāhu ghafūran raḥīmā

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes believers who have complete faith in Allah and His messengers without making distinctions or divisions among them, affirming the unity of the prophetic message from Adam through Muhammad (peace be upon them). Ibn Kathir notes this refers to those who accept all prophets equally without rejecting any, and Allah promises them full reward for their comprehensive belief. Al-Qurtubi emphasizes that refusing to differentiate between the prophets—whether by accepting some while rejecting others—is a fundamental principle of Islamic faith.

Revelation Context

This verse appears in the Medinan surah An-Nisa and follows verses addressing the People of the Book who rejected certain prophets. It specifically refutes the Jewish and Christian practice of accepting some messengers while denying others (like Muslims accepting Jesus but not accepting Muhammad), establishing that true believers must embrace all of Allah's messengers without distinction or favoritism.

Related Hadiths

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: 'None of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself' (Sahih Bukhari 13). Additionally, 'We make no distinction between any of His messengers' (2:285) is affirmed in Sahih Muslim 177, where the believers declare their acceptance of all prophets sent by Allah.

Key Lesson

True Islamic faith requires accepting all of Allah's messengers without discrimination or favor, recognizing that all came with the same essential message of monotheism. This teaches believers to reject sectarian divisions that deny certain prophets while accepting others, fostering spiritual integrity and receiving Allah's forgiveness and mercy.
