Wa man yuti'illaha wa rasulahu wa yakhsha allaha wa yattaqhi fa-ula'ika hum al-fa'izun

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah establishes the comprehensive conditions for achieving ultimate success (al-fauz): obedience to Allah and His Messenger, combined with fear of Allah (khashya) and piety (taqwa). According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, these four qualities form a complete spiritual framework—obedience demonstrates practical submission, while khashya and taqwa represent the internal states of reverence and consciousness of Allah that motivate righteous action. Those who embody these qualities are the true winners in both this life and the Hereafter.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears near the conclusion of Surah An-Nur (The Light), a Medinan surah that addresses moral and social conduct within the Muslim community. It serves as a summary statement reinforcing the central message of the surah: that obedience to divine guidance and the Prophet's teachings, grounded in sincere God-consciousness, leads to triumph and success.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself' (Sahih Bukhari). Additionally, 'The best of you are those with the best character' (Tirmidhi) relates to the comprehensive spiritual excellence described in this ayah.

Key Lesson

True success is not measured by worldly gains but by sincere submission to Allah coupled with genuine God-consciousness—a reminder that spiritual development requires both external obedience and internal transformation of the heart. This ayah challenges believers to examine whether their actions stem from authentic fear and reverence of Allah, not merely from habit or social expectation.
