Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah promises two gardens (paradises) for those who fear the standing before their Lord on the Day of Judgment. Classical scholars like Al-Qurtubi and Ibn Kathir emphasize that 'fearing the standing before Allah' (khawf maqām) refers to consciousness of accountability and fear of divine punishment, which motivates righteous action in this life. The promise of two gardens specifically rewards this spiritual consciousness and obedience that stems from genuine reverence of Allah.
Revelation Context
This ayah is part of Surah Ar-Rahman's Medinan passage that repeatedly emphasizes the blessings of Paradise reserved for the righteous. The surah contextualizes this reward within a series of contrasts between the fate of the righteous and the wicked, reinforcing that fear of Allah (taqwa) is the fundamental criterion for entry into Paradise.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The most beloved of people to Allah are those who are most dutiful to Him' (Tirmidhi). Also relevant: 'Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him from every distress' (Surah At-Talaq 65:2-3), emphasizing the protective and rewarding nature of God-consciousness.
