Transliteration
Inna Allaha yuhibbu alladhina yuqatiluna fi sabilihi saffan ka-annahum bunyanun marsus
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah expresses that Allah loves those who fight in His cause in organized ranks, as if they were a compact, well-built structure. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi emphasize that this describes the importance of unity, discipline, and coordinated effort in jihad, where believers stand firm and organized like a solidly constructed wall. The metaphor of 'compressed building' (bunyan marsus) illustrates how collective strength and steadfastness in an orderly formation pleases Allah, highlighting both the physical and spiritual dimensions of fighting with cohesion and resolve.
Revelation Context
Surah As-Saf is a Medinan chapter revealed during a period when the Muslim community was engaged in defensive struggles. This ayah appears within the context of the surah's discussion about struggle in Allah's cause and the qualities Allah loves in His servants. The revelation emphasizes the importance of organized, disciplined resistance and communal unity during times of conflict.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Verily, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in ranks as if they were a solid, compressed wall.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1338, graded Hasan). Additionally, in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim, there are multiple hadiths emphasizing the importance of standing in straight lines during prayer as a reflection of this same principle of unity and organization.
