Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allāh, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

The Ranks
Surah As-Saf (The Ranks) is the sixty-first chapter of the Quran, consisting of fourteen verses revealed in Medina. The surah derives its name from the fourth verse, which speaks of those who fight in the cause of God in solid ranks, as though they were a firmly cemented structure. The surah opens with a declaration that everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies God, establishing His sovereignty and wisdom as the foundation for all that follows. One of its most prominent themes is the imperative of unity, sincerity, and consistency between one's words and actions. The surah contains a stern divine admonition to the believers, asking why they say what they do not do, declaring that it is deeply hateful in the sight of God for people to profess what they fail to practice. This message was particularly relevant to the early Muslim community in Medina, where the demands of faith required not merely verbal commitment but active sacrifice, especially in the context of defending the nascent community against external aggression. The emphasis on fighting in organized, disciplined ranks reflects the practical challenges the Muslims faced and the need for collective resolve and moral integrity. A key narrative element in the surah involves references to two important prophets: Moses and Jesus, peace be upon them. The surah recounts how Moses was grieved by the persistent disobedience and hurtful behavior of his own people, the Children of Israel, even though they knew him to be God's messenger. This story serves as both a consolation to Prophet Muhammad and a warning against the pattern of rejecting divine guidance. Perhaps the most theologically significant passage in the surah is the account of Jesus, son of Mary, who is quoted as confirming the Torah that came before him and giving glad tidings of a messenger to come after him whose name would be Ahmad—a name closely related to Muhammad, both deriving from the Arabic root meaning "praise." This verse has been central in Islamic theology as evidence that the coming of Prophet Muhammad was foretold in earlier scriptures. The surah then notes that when clear signs came to the people, they dismissed them as sorcery, highlighting a recurring pattern in salvation history where communities reject the very messengers they were promised. The surah carries profound spiritual lessons about the nature of true faith and divine support. It calls upon the believers to be "helpers of God," echoing the question Jesus posed to his disciples, asking who would support him in God's cause, to which the disciples responded that they were God's helpers. This narrative serves to inspire the Muslim community to emulate such devotion and self-sacrifice. The surah also presents faith and striving in God's cause—through both wealth and personal effort—as a spiritual transaction, a "commerce" that saves one from a painful punishment and leads to forgiveness, gardens of

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allāh, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?
Greatly hateful in the sight of Allāh is that you say what you do not do.
Indeed, Allāh loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly.
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Moses said to his people, "O my people, why do you harm me while you certainly know that I am the messenger of Allāh to you?" And when they deviated, Allāh caused their hearts to deviate. And Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, "O Children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allāh to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Aḥmad." But when he came to them with clear evidences, they said, "This is obvious magic."
And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allāh untruth while he is being invited to Islām. And Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.
They want to extinguish the light of Allāh with their mouths, but Allāh will perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.
It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although those who associate others with Allāh dislike it.
O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment?
[It is that] you believe in Allāh and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allāh with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if you only knew.
He will forgive for you your sins and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence. That is the great attainment.
And [you will obtain] another [favor] that you love - victory from Allāh and an imminent conquest; and give good tidings to the believers.
O you who have believed, be supporters of Allāh, as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allāh?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allāh." And a faction of the Children of Israel believed and a faction disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant.
