Tafsir (Explanation)

This phrase, spoken by the sorcerers of Pharaoh's court after witnessing the miracle of Moses' staff, represents their recognition of Allah as the Lord of Moses and Aaron. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this declaration marks the sorcerers' sudden shift from disbelief to faith upon witnessing the clear signs, demonstrating that truth ultimately prevails over falsehood. Al-Qurtubi notes this moment exemplifies how divine miracles can pierce through the hardest hearts and lead even those steeped in deception to acknowledge the oneness of Allah.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of the narrative of Moses and Pharaoh in Surah Ash-Shu'ara (Meccan surah). The broader context describes the confrontation between Moses and the magicians of Egypt, where Allah's truth becomes manifest. The sorcerers' declaration occurs immediately after they witness the staff of Moses consume their ropes and staffs, leading them to spontaneous faith—an event meant to encourage the early Muslims facing opposition in Mecca.

Surah Ash-Shu'ara 26:46-48 parallels the account in Surah Ta-Ha 20:70, where similar language appears. While no specific hadith directly quotes this phrase, the theme of witnessing miracles leading to faith is supported by various hadiths regarding the proofs of prophethood and the inevitability of Allah's truth overcoming magic and falsehood.
