Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms that Allah reveals His message to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the same manner He revealed it to the prophets before him, establishing the continuity of divine revelation throughout history. The attributes 'Al-Aziz' (The Mighty) and 'Al-Hakim' (The All-Wise) emphasize that this revelation comes from One whose power is supreme and whose wisdom encompasses all things. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari note this verse validates the prophethood of Muhammad and the authenticity of the Quranic message by connecting it to the divine revelation given to earlier prophets.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears early in Surah Ash-Shuraa, a Meccan chapter that addresses the polytheists' rejection of Muhammad's prophethood. The verse responds to those who questioned the authenticity of his message by demonstrating that the method of revelation is consistent with the divine tradition established with previous messengers. This context strengthens the believers' faith during the early period of intense opposition in Mecca.

Related Hadiths

Related to the theme of revelation's continuity: The hadith in Sahih Bukhari where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'The best of the earlier and later generations are those who believe in me' affirms the connection between all prophetic messages. Additionally, Surah 4:163 (related theme) clarifies that revelation to Muhammad follows the same pattern as revelation to Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.

And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh or says, "It has been inspired to me," while nothing has been inspired to him, and one who says, "I will reveal [something] like what Allāh revealed."
