Transliteration

wa-tasīru al-jibālu sayran

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the mountains moving and traversing the earth, which is part of the cosmic signs of the Day of Judgment described in Surah At-Tur. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi explain this as one of the miraculous events that will occur when Allah commands the destruction of the current creation, where even the most seemingly permanent and immovable objects (mountains) will be set in motion. This imagery emphasizes the absolute power of Allah and the certainty of the resurrection when all creation will be transformed.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah At-Tur, a Meccan chapter that focuses on the signs of the Day of Judgment and divine majesty. The surah begins with an oath by the Mount (Tur, likely Mount Sinai) and proceeds to describe the horrors and wonders of the Last Day, including the movement of mountains, as part of Allah's reminder to the polytheists of Mecca about the reality of resurrection.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) mentioned the movement of mountains on the Day of Judgment in various contexts. See Sahih Muslim, where the description of Yawm al-Qiyamah (Day of Judgment) includes cosmic transformations. Additionally, refer to Surah Al-Insan (76:8-9) and other Quranic descriptions of the Day of Judgment for thematically related prophetic teachings.

Key Lesson

This ayah reminds us that nothing in creation is truly permanent or beyond Allah's power to transform, serving as a humbling reminder of our human insignificance and the inevitability of the Hereafter. We should use this contemplation of the Last Day as motivation to live righteously and prepare for accountability before Allah.
