Tafsir (Explanation)

On that Day, the earth will recount all that has transpired upon it—every deed, sin, and righteous act committed by humanity. Classical scholars like Al-Qurtubi and Ibn Kathir interpret this as the earth bearing witness to human actions, fulfilling Allah's promise that nothing is hidden from Him. This ayah emphasizes divine omniscience and the comprehensive nature of the Day of Judgment, where even the earth itself becomes a testifier against those who committed evil upon it.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Az-Zalzalah, a Medinan surah describing the signs and events of the Day of Judgment. The surah begins with the cosmic earthquake that signals the Hour, and this particular ayah falls within the description of how all creation—including the earth itself—will give testimony on that momentous day. The context emphasizes the certainty and totality of divine reckoning.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The earth will tell of all the deeds done upon it' (Tirmidhi). Additionally, Hadith Qudsi relates that Allah will ask the earth what she witnessed on the Day of Judgment (referenced in various classical collections). These hadiths support the literal testimony of the earth mentioned in this ayah.

Ḥajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made ḥajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of iḥrām], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during ḥajj. And whatever good you do - Allāh knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allāh. And fear Me, O you of understanding.

3:180Ali 'Imran

And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allāh has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allāh belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allāh, of what you do, is [fully] Aware.

11:92Hud

He said, "O my people, is my family more respected for power by you than Allāh? But you put Him behind your backs [in neglect]. Indeed, my Lord is encompassing of what you do.

10:36Yunus

And most of them follow not except assumption. Indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing of what they do.
