Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah conveys Allah's directive to the Prophet Muhammad that his role is solely to warn and deliver the message, not to compel belief or guarantee guidance. Ibn Kathir explains that the Prophet's responsibility ends at clear communication; the acceptance or rejection of the message rests with the people themselves. This principle underscores the limits of human effort in da'wah and the ultimate authority of Allah over hearts and guidance.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Fatir, a Meccan chapter that emphasizes Allah's creative power and the consequences of disbelief. The verse is part of a broader passage addressing the Prophet's role during the early Meccan period when his message faced severe rejection. The context reflects the Prophet's struggle against a disbelieving community and reassures him that his duty is limited to delivering the warning.
Related Hadiths
The Hadith of Jibril (Sahih Muslim) includes the Prophet's instruction on the five pillars and articles of faith, emphasizing the believers' responsibility to respond to guidance. Additionally, the Prophet stated: 'Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart' (Sahih Muslim), reflecting the theme of doing one's duty while accepting what is beyond one's control.
