Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah represents Prophet Ibrahim's supplication to Allah for forgiveness for himself, his parents, and all the believers on the Day of Judgment. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, Ibrahim's dua exemplifies the comprehensive mercy and concern of the prophets, extending forgiveness beyond oneself to one's family and the entire Muslim community. The phrase 'yawma yaqumu al-hisab' (the Day of Judgment) emphasizes the urgency and ultimate significance of seeking divine forgiveness before that momentous day.

The supplication reflects Ibrahim's character as portrayed throughout the Quran—a man of faith who intercedes for others. The broader thematic context of the surah concerns gratitude to Allah and the warnings against disbelief, making Ibrahim's dua a fitting example of righteous conduct and sincere devotion.
