Luqman · Ayah 30

Translations

That is because Allāh is the True Reality, and that what they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allāh is the Most High, the Grand.

Transliteration

Dhālika bi-anna Allāha huwa al-Haqqu wa-anna mā yad'ūna min dūnihi al-bāṭilu wa-anna Allāha huwa al-'Aliyyu al-Kabīru

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms that Allah alone is the Truth (al-Haqq) while all that is worshipped besides Him is falsehood (al-bāṭil). Ibn Kathir notes that this verse emphasizes Allah's supreme attributes as the Most High (al-'Aliyyu) and the Greatest (al-Kabīru), establishing His absolute dominion over creation. The verse serves as a definitive statement of monotheism, refuting polytheism and idol worship by highlighting the fundamental contrast between divine truth and human fabrications.

Revelation Context

Surah Luqman is Meccan and addresses polytheistic societies that worshipped idols and false deities alongside or instead of Allah. This ayah appears in the broader context of the surah's refutation of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and serves to reinforce the core Islamic doctrine of Tawheed through logical argument—that falsehood cannot stand against Truth.

Related Hadiths

The concept is reinforced in the hadith where the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The greatest sin is to ascribe partners to Allah' (Sahih Bukhari 2654). Additionally, Surah Al-Hajj 62:62 contains a related hadith-like affirmation that 'That is because Allah, He is the Truth, and because all besides Him is falsehood.'

Key Lesson

Believers should recognize that the worship of anything besides Allah is fundamentally false and baseless, while trusting in Allah's absolute truth and supreme greatness should serve as an anchor for unwavering faith in an increasingly complex world where false ideologies and distractions proliferate.
