Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes the perfect flatness and smoothness of the earth on the Day of Judgment, when all mountains will be leveled and the terrain will be completely even. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir explain that 'iwaj (crookedness) and 'amtt (unevenness/hollows) will be entirely absent, reflecting the complete transformation of creation. This verse emphasizes the absolute power of Allah to reshape the physical world and the finality of His justice on that Day.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Taha (a Meccan surah) within the broader context of descriptions of the Day of Judgment and the Hereafter. It is part of a passage (verses 105-107) where Allah describes how the earth will be changed and flattened, emphasizing the certainty of the Day of Resurrection to the disbelievers of Mecca.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'The earth will be stretched on the Day of Judgment like a leather hide.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi) - This hadith complements the ayah's description of the earth's transformation. Additionally, Surah 81:3 mentions 'when the mountains are scattered' which relates to this theme of leveling.
