لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ 1
I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]
Al-Balad
The City
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Surah Al-Balad (The City) is the 90th chapter of the Quran, comprising 20 verses revealed in Mecca during a period when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) faced intense opposition and persecution from the Quraysh of Mecca. The surah opens with a powerful divine oath sworn by the sacred city of Mecca itself, emphasizing the Prophet's intimate connection to this blessed land and affirming his honored status within it. God then swears by the bond of parent and child, before declaring a fundamental truth about the human condition: that mankind was created into a state of toil, struggle, and hardship. This opening establishes the surah's central meditation on the nature of human existence as one of perpetual effort and moral testing. The surah then confronts human arrogance, addressing the one who boasts of spending vast wealth and believes no one has power over him, asking rhetorically whether such a person thinks that no one observes him — a stark reminder of divine awareness and accountability. The surah proceeds to enumerate the blessings God has bestowed upon humanity — two eyes, a tongue, two lips — and, most significantly, guidance to the two clear paths of good and evil. This imagery of "the two highways" (al-najdayn) is one of the surah's most memorable metaphors, signifying that God has granted human beings both the faculties of perception and the moral discernment to choose between righteousness and wickedness. The surah then introduces the concept of "the steep path" (al-aqabah), a metaphor for the difficult but noble road of spiritual elevation that few choose to undertake. Rather than presenting a historical narrative or story of past prophets, the surah defines this steep path through a series of righteous deeds: freeing a slave or captive, feeding the destitute on a day of severe hunger — particularly an orphan who is a relative or a person in abject poverty lying in the dust. These acts are presented not merely as charitable gestures but as the very essence of what it means to overcome the lower self and ascend toward moral greatness. The surah concludes with a powerful distinction between two groups of people. Those who believe and mutually encourage one another toward patience and compassion are described as "the companions of the right hand" (ashab al-maymanah), destined for divine favor and salvation. In stark contrast, those who reject the signs of God are called "the companions of the left hand" (ashab al-mash'amah), upon whom the Fire will be sealed and closed over. This binary conclusion reinforces the surah's overarching message that human life, though inherently filled with struggle, is ultimately a moral proving ground. The surah does
لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ 1
I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]
وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ 2
And you, [O Muḥammad], are free of restriction in this city
وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ 3
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ 4
We have certainly created man into hardship.
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ 5
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?
يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا 6
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ 7
Does he think that no one has seen him?
أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ 8
Have We not made for him two eyes?
وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ 9
And a tongue and two lips?
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ 10
And have shown him the two ways?
فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ 11
But he has not broken through the difficult pass.
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ 12
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ 13
It is the freeing of a slave
أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ 14
Or feeding on a day of severe hunger
يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ 15
An orphan of near relationship
أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ 16
Or a needy person in misery
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ 17
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ 18
Those are the companions of the right.
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ 19
But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.
عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ 20
Over them will be fire closed in.
