Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes those who will be gathered upon their faces toward Hell on the Day of Judgment, emphasizing that such a state is the worst of places and the most misguided of paths. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir explain that being gathered on one's face is a sign of humiliation and rejection, depicting the severe punishment awaiting those who turned away from guidance in this life. Al-Qurtubi notes that this vivid imagery serves as a powerful warning about the consequences of disbelief and deviation from the straight path.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Al-Furqan (a Meccan surah revealed during the early period of Islam), which discusses the distinction between believers and disbelievers, particularly addressing the polytheists of Mecca who rejected the Qur'an. The ayah fits within the broader context of the surah's theme of presenting the criteria (furqan) for distinguishing truth from falsehood and the ultimate fates of each group.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Every soul will taste death, and We will test you with evil and good as a trial' (Qur'an 21:35). Additionally, Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet mentioned the horrors of Hellfire and the various punishments, emphasizing accountability on the Day of Judgment (Sahih Muslim).
