Transliteration

Inna alladhina la yu'minuna bi-ayati allahi la yahdihimu allahu wa-lahum adhab alim

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah declares that those who reject the signs and proofs of Allah will not receive guidance from Him, and they will face a severe and painful punishment. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari emphasize that rejection of Allah's clear signs is a choice that seals the heart from guidance, as Allah does not guide those who willfully turn away. The 'alim' (painful) punishment refers to the torment in the afterlife that awaits those who persistently deny Allah's revelation.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah An-Nahl, revealed in Mecca during a period of intense opposition to the Prophet Muhammad and the message of Islam. It addresses the Meccan polytheists who rejected the Quranic signs despite their clarity, establishing a consistent theme throughout the surah regarding the consequences of disbelief and the blessings of faith.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not from me' (Sahih Bukhari 5063), reflecting the principle that rejection of divine guidance leads to separation from Allah's mercy. Additionally, 'The hearts are between two fingers of the Most Merciful' (Sunan Ibn Majah 198) illustrates how Allah's guidance is conditional upon sincere openness to His signs.
