Translations

And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow [i.e., stroke] -

Transliteration

Wa humilati al-ardu wa al-jibalu fa dukkat dakkatan wahidah

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the Day of Judgment when the earth and mountains will be lifted up and then crushed into dust in a single, violent blow. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir explain that 'dukkat' (crushed/pulverized) emphasizes the complete annihilation and transformation of these seemingly immovable structures, signifying the utter destruction of the material world on Yawm al-Qiyamah (the Day of Resurrection). This imagery underscores the absolute power of Allah and the inevitability of the Final Hour.

Revelation Context

Surah Al-Haqqah is a Meccan surah that focuses on the certainty of the Day of Judgment and its terrifying events. This ayah is part of a vivid sequence (verses 13-18) describing the cosmic upheaval and catastrophic signs that will precede and accompany the Day of Judgment, serving to warn the Meccan disbelievers about accountability in the Hereafter.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said regarding the Day of Judgment: 'The earth will be changed into a different earth and the heavens as well' (Sahih Muslim 2790). Additionally, Surah Al-Hajj 22:20 complements this theme: 'The Day they will see the torment... it will be said, "Taste what you used to earn."'
