Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah means 'So he will call out for destruction,' referring to the disbeliever on the Day of Judgment who will desperately invoke ruin and perdition upon himself. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir explain that 'thubur' (ثبور) means destruction, death, or ruin, expressing the intense despair and anguish of those who rejected faith. The ayah emphasizes the hopelessness and regret that will consume the disbelievers in the afterlife when they realize the consequences of their choices.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Al-Inshiqaq, a Meccan surah that describes the cosmic upheaval and separation of souls on the Day of Judgment. The context surrounding this ayah (84:10-12) depicts the disbeliever's state when presented with his book of deeds—he will call for destruction, yet he will be cast into the fire. This reflects the broader Meccan theme of warning about the Hereafter and accountability.
