Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah addresses the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment, explaining that their punishment is the consequence of mocking Allah's signs and being deceived by worldly life. Ibn Kathir notes that 'huzuwan' (mockery) refers to their deliberate ridicule and rejection of the Qur'an and divine messages. The ayah emphasizes the finality of their fate: they will neither be expelled from Hell nor given an opportunity to make amends ('istiabah'), as Al-Qurtubi explains, meaning they have no chance for redemption or reprieve.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the context of Surah Al-Jathiyah's broader Meccan themes addressing disbelief and the certainty of the afterlife. While no specific asbab al-nuzul is recorded for this verse, it reflects the general Meccan period emphasis on warning the Quraysh about the consequences of rejecting divine revelation and becoming preoccupied with material pursuits rather than spiritual guidance.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever mocks something from the Qur'an or the religion of Allah, he has disbelieved' (Tirmidhi). Additionally, the hadith in Sahih Bukhari emphasizes that those who turn away from Allah's signs will face severe punishment in the afterlife.

It serves as a solemn warning that dismissing faith casually or through mockery carries eternal consequences, encouraging thoughtful reflection on what truly matters beyond this temporary life.
