Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes the believers who live in a state of reverent fear and apprehension of their Lord, constantly mindful of His majesty and accountability before Him. According to Al-Qurtubi and Ibn Kathir, 'mushfiqun' (those who are apprehensive) refers to those who maintain a delicate balance between hope in Allah's mercy and fear of His punishment, leading them to continuous vigilance in their obedience. This quality distinguishes the true believers from those who are heedless, as their fear of Allah is not paralyzing but rather motivating them toward righteous deeds.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Mu'minun was revealed in Mecca during the early period of Islam and addresses the characteristics of successful believers. This ayah is part of a passage (23:57-61) that contrasts the spiritual state of true believers with their actions, establishing that genuine faith manifests in both internal reverence and external good deeds such as charity and humility.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The most perfect believer in faith is the one who is best in character' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1162), reflecting the behavioral manifestation of fear of Allah. Additionally, 'Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him' (Surah At-Talaq 65:2-3) emphasizes the protective benefit of God-consciousness.
