Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah asks, 'For which Day has it been postponed?' referring to the Day of Judgment that the disbelievers mock and deny. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir explain that Allah is questioning the disbelievers about their claim that the Day of Judgment is far away or will never occur. The ayah emphasizes that despite their denial, the Day is fixed and appointed by Allah alone, and no delay can change its inevitability.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Mursalat is a Meccan surah that focuses on themes of the Day of Judgment and Allah's power. This ayah appears within a section (77:7-15) where Allah swears by various cosmic phenomena to affirm the certainty of the Day of Judgment, directly addressing the Meccan disbelievers' skepticism about the Hereafter.
Related Hadiths
The concept relates to Sahih Bukhari (Volume 4, Book 54, Hadith 414) where the Prophet ﷺ mentions that the Hour will come unexpectedly. Also relevant is the theme in Jami' at-Tirmidhi regarding the denial of the Day of Judgment by disbelievers.
