وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ فُرِجَتْ 9

Translations

And when the heaven is opened

Transliteration

Wa-idha al-samaa'u furijat

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the splitting or tearing apart of the sky on the Day of Judgment, one of the major signs of the Hour. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret 'furijat' (was split/torn) as the sky being rent asunder and losing its cohesion, a vivid depiction of cosmic upheaval. This image emphasizes the absolute power of Allah and the certainty of the Day of Resurrection when the natural order will be completely transformed.

Revelation Context

Surah Al-Mursalat is a Meccan surah that focuses on the themes of judgment, resurrection, and the signs of the Hour. This ayah is part of a series of rhetorical questions describing apocalyptic events (verses 8-10) that serve to remind the disbelievers of Mecca about the inevitability of divine accountability and the Day of Judgment.

Related Hadiths

The splitting of the sky is mentioned in Surah Al-Infitar 82:1 and described in detail in prophetic traditions about the Day of Judgment. Related hadith: 'The sky will be cleft asunder' (Sahih Muslim, regarding signs of the Hour). Also, the Prophet (ﷺ) described various cosmic signs in multiple ahadith about Yawm al-Qiyamah (Day of Judgment).
