Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to those who deny and reject the Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Din), a fundamental article of Islamic faith. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this denial represents one of the gravest sins, as it undermines the foundation of accountability and moral responsibility in Islam. The ayah emphasizes that such people are among the most deprived (aṣḥāb al-sijjīl—the companions of the record), whose deeds are recorded as lies and whose hearts are sealed from guidance.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Al-Mutaffifin (The Defrauders), a Meccan surah that denounces those who cheat in weights and measures and, more broadly, those who deny the Hereafter. The surah's context addresses the disbelievers of Mecca who rejected the concept of divine judgment, making this denial central to their refusal to accept Prophet Muhammad's message.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa-sallam) said: 'Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent' (Sahih Bukhari 6018), emphasizing that belief in the Day of Judgment should fundamentally transform one's behavior. Additionally, 'The best of you are those who have the best character' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1162) relates to the moral accountability inherent in believing in divine judgment.
