Tafsir (Explanation)
This phrase refers to the recording angels' book in which the deeds of the righteous are inscribed and preserved. The word 'marqum' (written/inscribed) emphasizes that these records are permanent and cannot be altered or denied. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this ayah assures believers that their righteous actions are meticulously documented by the angels in an eternal record, affirming divine justice and accountability.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears near the end of Surah Al-Mutaffifin, which condemns those who defraud others in measurements and weights. The ayah contrasts the fate of the righteous (whose deeds are recorded in an honored book) with that of the wicked. This provides thematic assurance to the faithful that despite worldly injustices, divine record-keeping ensures ultimate justice.
Related Hadiths
