Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah refers to the Day of Judgment when the believers will laugh (in joy and vindication) at the disbelievers, witnessing the fulfillment of Allah's promises and the consequences of rejecting faith. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this laughter symbolizes the believers' delight at their salvation and the disbelievers' punishment, representing the ultimate triumph of truth over falsehood. Al-Qurtubi notes that this laughter is not mockery but rather a manifestation of joy at divine justice being served.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Mutaffifin addresses those who defraud in weights and measures, and this ayah concludes the surah by depicting the ultimate fate of believers versus disbelievers on the Day of Judgment. It provides hopeful reassurance to the believers being mocked in Mecca that they will ultimately be vindicated when the Hour comes.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The believers will laugh on the Day of Judgment at the disbelievers' (related to this theme in various hadith collections). Additionally, Hadith Qudsi mentions Allah's promise to elevate the believers and humiliate those who reject Him (Sahih Muslim and Tirmidhi).
