إِنَّ لَكَ فِى ٱلنَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَوِيلًا 7
Translations
Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation.
Transliteration
Inna laka fi al-nahari sabhan tawilan
Tafsir (Explanation)
Allah addresses the Prophet Muhammad, assuring him that during the day he has ample time for his worldly affairs and engagements, contrasting with the command to spend much of the night in prayer mentioned in the preceding verses. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi interpret 'sabhan tawilan' (lengthy free time) as Divine permission for the Prophet to attend to necessary daily activities, family matters, and the affairs of his community, rather than devoting all hours solely to worship. This demonstrates the balanced approach of Islamic practice—combining devotion with responsible engagement in worldly obligations.
Revelation Context
This ayah is part of Surah Al-Muzzammil, revealed in the early Meccan period, which commands intensive night prayer and Quranic recitation. The surah opens with instructions to stand in prayer most of the night, but this ayah provides relief and practical wisdom by acknowledging that the daytime is for normal activities, establishing the Islamic principle of balance between spiritual and material responsibilities.
Related Hadiths

Additionally, the Prophet ﷺ practiced normal daily activities including business and governance, exemplifying the balance referenced in this verse.
