بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ 27

Translations

Rather, we have been deprived."

Transliteration

Bal nahnu mahrumun

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah represents the words of the servants of Allah expressing their deprivation and loss, stating 'Rather, we are the deprived ones.' According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this occurs in the context of the parable of the garden owners who forgot to give charity and subsequently lost their harvest. The speakers acknowledge their own spiritual poverty and deprivation as a consequence of their neglect of the poor and their arrogance, serving as a profound lesson about the consequences of withholding from those in need.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of the parable of the two garden owners (Surah Al-Qalam 68:17-33), a Meccan surah addressing the Quraysh's disbelief and arrogance. The parable illustrates the fate of those who rely solely on worldly possessions while neglecting their obligations to Allah and the poor, making this a thematic reminder about the transience of wealth and the importance of charity.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The best charity is that given when one is in need, yet still gives' (related to the theme of obligation to give). Additionally, Surah Al-Qalam 68:17 connects to the hadith in Sahih Bukhari about the importance of gratitude and remembrance of Allah in times of prosperity.

Key Lesson

This ayah teaches us that true deprivation comes not from lack of wealth, but from abandoning our obligations to Allah and neglecting the rights of the poor and needy. It serves as a reminder that arrogance and self-reliance on material possessions ultimately lead to spiritual and worldly loss, while humble reliance on Allah and generosity toward others brings true fulfillment.
