Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes how Allah strengthened the heart of Musa's mother after she cast her infant son into the river to save him from Pharaoh's persecution. Her heart became empty of fear and anxiety, and she was on the verge of revealing her son's location out of maternal anguish, but Allah bound and fortified her heart with patience and faith so that she might remain among the believers. Ibn Kathir notes this demonstrates Allah's divine protection of both Musa and his mother, while Al-Qurtubi emphasizes the miraculous nature of her supernatural composure despite her natural maternal instinct to reveal such a grave secret.
Revelation Context
This ayah is part of the narrative of Prophet Musa's birth and early childhood within Surah Al-Qasas, which focuses on the stories of the prophets. The context immediately follows the command given to Musa's mother in the previous ayah to cast her son into the river as protection from Pharaoh's decree to kill Hebrew males. This ayah illustrates the divine support granted to believers during trials.
Related Hadiths
While no hadith directly quotes this ayah, the concept relates to Hadith Qudsi wherein Allah says: 'When I test a servant through loss of his beloved, and he is patient, I will replace Paradise for it' (Sahih Bukhari 5641). Additionally, Surah Al-Ankabut 2-3 discusses trials and patience in similar contexts.
