Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah refers to Allah's creation of the two sexes (male and female) from a single soul (nafs wahidah), as mentioned in the preceding ayah 75:38. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir explain that Allah created humanity with the capacity for procreation and companionship through the pairing of male and female, establishing the foundation of human society. This demonstrates Allah's perfect wisdom in designing creation with complementary pairs, a principle that reflects divine order throughout nature.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Qiyamah is a Meccan surah focused on the Day of Resurrection and the certainty of the Hereafter. This particular ayah appears within a passage (75:37-40) that emphasizes Allah's creative power and sovereignty over human creation, contrasting human weakness and dependence with divine omnipotence—a recurring theme used to convince the polytheists of Mecca regarding monotheism and resurrection.
Related Hadiths
The concept is reinforced in Sahih Bukhari (Hadith 3331) where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Women are the twin halves of men,' emphasizing the complementary nature of male and female. Additionally, Sunan Ibn Majah contains hadiths about the creation of Hawwa (Eve) from the rib of Adam, illustrating the pairing concept.
