Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes the disbeliever's mockery and questioning: 'When is the Day of Resurrection?' Ibn Kathir explains this reflects the arrogant skepticism of the Quraysh who denied the Hereafter and challenged the Prophet (ﷺ) regarding its timing. Al-Qurtubi notes that despite numerous warnings in the Quran about the Day of Judgment, the disbelievers persist in their rejection, asking this question out of derision rather than genuine inquiry. The ayah emphasizes how the resurrection remains certain despite their mockery.
Revelation Context
This ayah is part of Surah Al-Qiyamah, which is a Meccan surah focused on affirming the reality of the Resurrection and the Day of Judgment. The context addresses the mockery of the Quraysh who persistently denied the Hereafter and ridiculed the Prophet's message about the final day.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The Hour will not be established until... the sun has risen from the West' (Sahih Bukhari 3209), addressing precisely when the Day of Resurrection will occur, thereby answering the disbelievers' taunting questions. Additionally, Surah Al-Qiyamah 75:1 contains the oath 'I swear by the Day of Resurrection,' which emphasizes the certainty of this day despite people's denials.

Key Lesson
Believers should remain steadfast in their conviction regarding the Day of Judgment despite living in a world where many mock or deny it; our certainty in Allah's promises should not waver based on others' skepticism or derision.
