Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes one of the signs of the Day of Judgment wherein the sun and moon will be brought together (joined or gathered). According to classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, this refers to a miraculous cosmic event where these two celestial bodies, which have been separated since creation, will be unified—signifying the complete upheaval of the natural order and the approach of the Final Hour. This gathering represents the ultimate dissolution of the familiar universe as a prelude to mankind's resurrection and accountability before Allah.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Qiyamah is a Meccan surah that focuses comprehensively on the themes of resurrection, divine power, and the signs of the Last Day. This ayah appears within a passage (75:7-9) describing major cosmic phenomena that will occur on the Day of Judgment, serving to convince the disbelievers of Mecca of Allah's absolute power and the certainty of the Hereafter.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) described various signs of the Hour in multiple hadiths. A related hadith in Sahih Muslim describes the sun and moon being rolled up on the Day of Judgment. Additionally, hadiths in Sunan Ibn Majah and Sunan At-Tirmidhi describe the darkening and falling of celestial bodies as among the major signs of the Last Hour.

Key Lesson
This ayah reminds believers that the seemingly permanent and orderly cosmos is ultimately temporary and subject to Allah's will, encouraging us to prioritize our relationship with the Divine and prepare for accountability in the Hereafter rather than becoming complacent in worldly pursuits. The gathering of the sun and moon serves as a powerful metaphor that no matter how distant or separate things may seem, Allah's command brings all things together according to His divine plan.
