An-Nazi'at · Ayah 19

وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ 19

Translations

And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'"

Transliteration

Wa-ahdeeka ilaa rabbika fatakhshaa

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah is part of Allah's address to Musa (Moses), where Allah promises to guide him to his Lord so that he may fear Him with proper reverence and obedience. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as Allah's promise to lead Musa through clear signs and proofs to understanding of His majesty and lordship, resulting in true God-consciousness (taqwa). The guidance mentioned here encompasses both the removal of doubts and the strengthening of certainty in Allah's oneness and authority.

Revelation Context

This ayah occurs within Surah An-Nazi'at's narrative of Musa's encounter with Allah at Mount Sinai, specifically after Allah reveals Himself to Musa through the burning bush. It forms part of the divine dialogue where Allah addresses Musa's initial fear and reluctance, assuring him of divine guidance before sending him to Pharaoh. The surah emphasizes the power of Allah's guidance and the inevitable accountability of all souls on the Day of Judgment.

Related Hadiths

Related to the theme of guidance and God-consciousness is the hadith in Sahih Bukhari where the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever Allah wishes good for, He grants him understanding of the religion.' Also relevant is the hadith in Sahih Muslim about taqwa (God-consciousness): 'Piety is here' - pointing to the heart - emphasizing that true guidance leads to internal reverence, not merely external compliance.

Key Lesson

True guidance from Allah is not merely intellectual knowledge but leads to a transformation of the heart resulting in genuine fear and reverence of the Creator. For believers today, seeking Allah's guidance should be accompanied by a sincere desire for taqwa—a conscious awareness of standing before Allah that transforms conduct and character.
