An-Nisa · Ayah 52

Translations

Those are the ones whom Allāh has cursed; and he whom Allāh curses - never will you find for him a helper.

Transliteration

Ulā'ika alladhīna laanatahumu Allāhu wa man yalʿani Allāhu falan tajida lahu nāṣīrā

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to those who have been cursed by Allah—specifically the Jews who rejected Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and fabricated lies about him, as mentioned in the preceding context of Surah An-Nisa. The verse establishes the grave consequence that whoever is cursed by Allah will find no helper or protector, emphasizing Allah's ultimate authority and the futility of opposing His truth. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari connect this to the rejection of divine signs and the deliberate distortion of truth, which results in complete abandonment and defeat.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of a passage (4:46-52) revealed in Medina addressing the behavior of certain Jews who mocked the Prophet and distorted divine revelations. The context discusses those who rejected the message despite clear evidence, making this a specific condemnation of their obstinate denial and deliberate fabrication against Islam.

Related Hadiths

Sahih Bukhari narrates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever curses a believer, it is like killing him.' This contrasts with this ayah's description of Allah's curse upon those who reject His signs. Additionally, the hadith in Jami' At-Tirmidhi emphasizes that Allah's curse falls upon those who distort divine knowledge.

Themes

Divine punishment and curseRejection of prophetic guidanceConsequences of arrogance and denialAllah's absolute authorityAbandonment by divine support

Key Lesson

This ayah serves as a solemn warning that rejecting divine truth and persisting in falsehood leads to complete spiritual abandonment, with no refuge or support available. For believers, it reinforces the importance of accepting Allah's guidance with sincerity and avoiding the path of those who deliberately distort truth.

And if We had decreed upon them, "Kill yourselves" or "Leave your homes," they would not have done it, except for a few of them. But if they had done what they were instructed, it would have been better for them and a firmer position [for them in faith].

Those who believe fight in the cause of Allāh, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of ṭāghūt. So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak.

Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves - [the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." They [the angels] will say, "Was not the earth of Allāh spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.
