An-Nisa · Ayah 73

Translations

But if bounty comes to you from Allāh, he will surely say, as if [i.e., showing that] there had never been between you and him any affection, "Oh, I wish I had been with them so I could have attained a great attainment."

Transliteration

Wa-la'in asabakum fadlun min-Allah layaqulunna ka'an lam takun baynakum wa-baynahu mawaddah ya-laytani kuntu ma'ahum fa-afuz fawzan 'adhima

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the hypocrites' (munafiqun) opportunistic nature: when Muslims receive blessing or victory from Allah, the hypocrites falsely claim they would have participated and earned great reward, despite having abandoned the believers when help was needed. Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari explain this refers to those who stayed behind during expeditions and battles, then envied the spoils and honors gained by those who fought, revealing their lack of sincere faith and loyalty to the Muslim community.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah An-Nisa's broader condemnation of hypocrites (revealed in Madinah). It specifically addresses those who shirked their duty to participate in jihad and military campaigns during the Prophet Muhammad's era, then expressed regret when others succeeded—exposing the contradiction between their claims of faith and their actual deeds.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The best of people are those who are most useful to people' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi). Related thematically is the hadith in Sahih Bukhari about those who stayed behind from the Tabuk expedition, whom the Prophet reproved for their absence.

Themes

Hypocrisy (nifaq) and its manifestationsEnvy and opportunismLack of sincere commitment to the Islamic communityDivine wisdom in distinguishing believers from hypocritesConsequences of abandoning duty and responsibility

Key Lesson

This ayah teaches that sincere faith requires consistent action and loyalty, not merely wishful thinking or opportunistic participation when benefits are visible. Believers should examine their intentions and ensure their deeds match their words, avoiding the hypocrite's trap of claiming credit for efforts they never undertook.
