وَلَقَدْ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ 114
Translations
And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.
Transliteration
Wa-laqad mananna 'alaa Moosaa wa-Haarun
Tafsir (Explanation)
Allah affirms His favor and grace upon Musa and Harun, highlighting the special status He bestowed upon these two prophets. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this refers to the numerous blessings Allah granted them, including prophethood, clear signs, scriptures, and divine support in their mission to Pharaoh and the Children of Israel. The use of 'mananna' (bestowed favor) emphasizes that these were undeserved gifts from Allah's mercy rather than anything earned through their own efforts.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah As-Saffat, a Meccan chapter that discusses various prophets and their histories. The context here is part of a broader section (verses 114-122) recounting Allah's blessings upon Musa and Harun, their message to Pharaoh, and the deliverance of the believers. This affirmation would have strengthened the early Meccan Muslims by reminding them of Allah's consistent support for His prophets throughout history.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said regarding the status of prophets: 'The best people are those of my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them' (Sahih Bukhari). Additionally, in Sahih Muslim, there are reports emphasizing Musa's high rank as one of the greatest and most resolute messengers (Ulul-'Azm).
