And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]

Transliteration

Wa ja'alna dhurriyyatahu humu al-baqin

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to Prophet Nuh (Noah), stating that Allah preserved his descendants as those who would remain and continue after him, while his people who rejected him were destroyed in the flood. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that this highlights Allah's mercy in preserving the righteous lineage of the prophets, ensuring the continuation of monotheism and divine guidance through Nuh's believing family—particularly his son who believed with him and his wife (mentioned in Surah Hud), whose descendants populated the earth after the flood.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears within Surah As-Saffat, a Meccan chapter that chronicles stories of prophets and their perseverance against their people's rejection. The broader context (verses 75-82) recounts Nuh's mission, emphasizing how he preached for 950 years with minimal believers, yet Allah honored him by making his progeny the survivors who would inherit the earth.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: 'The best of the descendants of Adam are the Prophets, and the best of the Prophets is Muhammad' (Tirmidhi). Additionally, hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari mentions the virtue of the progeny of the prophets as carriers of divine knowledge and guidance.

Key Lesson

This ayah teaches that Allah's promise to preserve the righteous and their descendants is eternal; believers should trust that their sincere faith and good deeds will create a lasting spiritual legacy. It also reminds us that rejection of divine truth leads to destruction, while submission to Allah's message ensures both worldly honor and an honored progeny in the sight of the Lord.
