Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah depicts the punishment of those who neglected the remembrance of Allah and forgot the Day of Judgment in their worldly pursuits. Allah addresses them saying 'Taste [the punishment] for what you forgot of the meeting of this Day of yours; indeed, We have forgotten you'—meaning He will deprive them of His mercy and forgiveness as they deprived themselves of obedience to Him. Al-Qurtubi notes that their 'forgetting' the Day of Judgment led to their heedlessness in this life, and consequently, Allah's abandonment of them in the Hereafter reflects divine justice (istiwfa).
Revelation Context
Surah As-Sajdah is a Meccan chapter that emphasizes creation, the reality of the afterlife, and accountability. This ayah appears in the context of describing the fate of disbelievers and those who turned away from Allah's signs. It serves as a warning to those who prioritize worldly affairs over spiritual preparation for the Day of Judgment.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Remember frequently the destroyer of pleasures' meaning death (Tirmidhi 2307). Related to this theme is the hadith: 'The best of you are those who remember death most frequently' (Ibn Majah 4259), emphasizing the importance of remembering the Hereafter rather than forgetting it.

Key Lesson
This ayah serves as a profound reminder that neglecting preparation for the Afterlife in pursuit of worldly distractions carries serious spiritual consequences. Muslims should maintain conscious awareness (taqwa) of meeting Allah and the Day of Judgment, as forgetfulness of these realities in this life leads to divine abandonment in the next.
