Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah is part of Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham's) supplication to Allah, where he expresses his hope that Allah will forgive his sins on the Day of Judgment. Ibn Kathir explains that Ibrahim is affirming his reliance on Allah's mercy and forgiveness despite his deeds, recognizing that only Allah's pardon can save him on that ultimate day. This reflects the profound humility and God-consciousness (taqwa) of the prophets, who never consider themselves free from the need for Allah's forgiveness.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets), a Meccan surah that features the stories of various prophets. Verse 82 is part of Prophet Ibrahim's prayer (du'a) which he makes after recounting his experiences and his unwavering faith in monotheism. The broader context emphasizes the spiritual state of the prophets and their constant reliance on Allah.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if you did not commit sins, Allah would replace you with people who would commit sins and then ask forgiveness from Allah, and He would forgive them.' (Sahih Muslim 2687). This hadith complements the theme of seeking Allah's forgiveness as a fundamental human need.
