Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah records Prophet Ibrahim's supplication to Allah, asking for wisdom (hukm) and to be joined with the righteous (as-saliheen) in the Hereafter. According to classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, Ibrahim's request for wisdom encompasses both prophetic knowledge and sound judgment in religious and worldly affairs, while his plea to be joined with the righteous reflects his desire for spiritual elevation and companionship with those who obey Allah. This du'a emphasizes that true success lies not merely in material blessings, but in moral and spiritual excellence.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears within Surah ash-Shu'ara (The Poets), a Meccan chapter that documents the supplications and struggles of various prophets. The broader context of verses 83-89 presents Ibrahim's complete du'a, which follows the mention of his trials and his steadfastness in faith, illustrating how the prophets turned to Allah in humility despite their elevated status.
