Tafsir (Explanation)
These are among the Quranic initials (Huruf Muqatta'ah) whose exact meaning is known only to Allah, though scholars have offered various interpretations. Ibn Kathir mentions that these letters are part of the miraculous nature of the Quran, serving as a reminder of the inimitability of the divine speech. Al-Qurtubi notes that these initials appear at the beginning of several surahs and may serve as attention-grabbers to emphasize the importance of the message that follows.
Revelation Context
This ayah begins Surah Ash-Shuraa, a Meccan surah revealed during the early Islamic period. The surah addresses fundamental Islamic principles including the oneness of Allah, revelation, and consultation (shura) as a principle of governance. The opening letters serve as a distinctive marker for this surah's beginning, a common feature in Quranic structure.
Related Hadiths
While no hadith directly explains these specific letters, Imam As-Suyuti recorded in Itqan fi Ulum al-Quran that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not explain the meanings of the Huruf Muqatta'ah, indicating they are part of the divine secrets (ghayb) known only to Allah.
Themes
Key Lesson
