At-Taghabun · Ayah 7

Translations

Those who disbelieve have claimed that they will never be resurrected. Say, "Yes, by my Lord, you will surely be resurrected; then you will surely be informed of what you did. And that, for Allāh, is easy."

Transliteration

Za'ama alladhina kafaroo an lan yub'athoo. Qul bala wa rabbi la-tub'athunna thumma la-tunabba'unna bima 'amilltum. Wa dhalika 'ala Allahi yasir.

Tafsir (Explanation)

The disbelievers claim they will not be resurrected, but Allah commands the Prophet (ﷺ) to emphatically affirm that by His Lord, they will surely be raised and held accountable for their deeds. Classical exegetes like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari explain this as a direct refutation of the Meccan polytheists' denial of the Resurrection (al-ba'th), emphasizing that accountability is both certain and divinely effortless. The phrase 'wa dhalika 'ala Allahi yasir' (and that is easy for Allah) underscores the omnipotence of God and the impossibility of denying His justice.

Revelation Context

This ayah addresses the persistent denial of the Resurrection (al-ba'th) among the Meccan disbelievers, a central point of contention between the Prophet (ﷺ) and his opponents. The surah At-Taghabun (revealed in Medina) continues to refute this fundamental article of Islamic faith, particularly relevant to those who rejected belief in the Hereafter.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent' (Sahih Bukhari 6018), emphasizing accountability in the Hereafter. Additionally, 'The Day of Judgment will not come until knowledge is taken away' (Sahih Bukhari 80) relates to the consequences of rejecting divine truth.

Key Lesson

This ayah reminds believers that denying the Day of Judgment does not negate its reality—all will be resurrected and held accountable regardless of their earthly convictions. The certainty of resurrection should inspire believers to conduct their affairs with consciousness of Allah (taqwa) and moral responsibility.
